Question for all my fellow D&D nerds: what is exploration? It’s supposed to be one of the 3 pillars of the game, but I don’t have a clear definition of it. Is exploration just the travel time between cities and dungeons? Is it when players look for treasure and traps in a crypt or cave? Does it happen during combat or while talking to an NPC?

Taking notes from above! Love them.
In my experience, some gms will do hexcrawl. Literally having an mini encounter each hexagon as the group travel through the map. Some gms will be streamlining exploration by doing skill challenges. It is really up to you and your players agreeing on what you and your players enjoy.
The game is as much as yours and your players imho.
